FAQ

What do you call a dining spot in the kitchen?

The dining area within a kitchen is often called an eat-in kitchen or a breakfast nook. These spaces are designed for casual meals and can range from a small table with chairs to a built-in bench or bar seating at a counter. Having a dedicated dining spot in your kitchen can make family meals more convenient and create a cozy atmosphere for quick snacks or coffee breaks. If you're looking to add one, consider the available space and how many people you'd like to seat comfortably.

What's the 3x4 kitchen rule all about?

The 3x4 kitchen rule refers to a layout guideline that helps keep your kitchen functional and organized. It suggests dividing your kitchen into three main zones—cooking, cleaning, and storage—and ensuring each zone is easily accessible within a four-step reach. This approach can make meal prep smoother and help you avoid unnecessary movement. When planning your kitchen or rearranging items, think about grouping tools and appliances by their main use to keep everything within easy reach.

Is there a new trend instead of kitchen islands?

Yes, one trend that's gaining popularity is the use of kitchen tables or peninsulas instead of traditional islands. These options can offer more flexibility in smaller spaces and create a more open, social feel. For example, a kitchen table can double as a prep area and a dining spot, while a peninsula extends from existing counters to add workspace without taking up as much room as an island. Choosing the right setup depends on your kitchen's size and how you like to use the space.

What does a dining kitchen mean?

A dining kitchen is simply a kitchen that includes a dedicated area for eating meals. This can be a separate dining table, a built-in booth, or even a breakfast bar with stools. Dining kitchens are great for families or anyone who enjoys casual meals without moving to a formal dining room. They help maximize space and make everyday dining more convenient, especially in open-concept homes or apartments.

How do I pick the right kitchen table size?

Choosing the right kitchen table size depends on your available space and how many people you want to seat. Here are a few tips:

  • Measure your space: Leave at least 36 inches around the table for easy movement.
  • Consider your needs: Round tables work well in smaller kitchens, while rectangular tables fit longer spaces.
  • Think about seating: Make sure everyone has enough elbow room and the table doesn't overcrowd the kitchen.

It's always a good idea to map out the area with tape before buying to visualize the fit.

Furniture

If you have a dining room, a table and chairs are necessities to make proper use of that space. We have many different dining room sets available, ideal for two people or six or more. The tables come in many shapes, such as round, square, oval and rectangular, in sizes that range from less than 30 inches long to more than 100 inches and heights that range from 15 inches or less to more than 31 inches. Match the style of your dining set to that of the rest of your home with contemporary, modern, rustic or transitional styles. You can also buy the table and chairs separately and mix and match them as you see fit. There are other pieces in matching styles you can add to your dining area as well.

  • Barstools These chairs with long legs are placed alongside kitchen counters, freestanding bars and pass-through windows for guests to sit at. Some just have a seat, while others have high backs, too.
  • Pub tables These are small tables that are round, square or other shapes and have long legs and usually two modest chairs that have slightly longer legs than dining chairs. These can also serve as bistro sets and breakfast tables.
  • Sideboards and buffets When you need additional serving space, such as for holiday meals, sideboards and buffets make it possible to keep dishes close to the dinner table. These are stationary cabinets that rest along a wall near the dining table. When not in use, they can serve as a place for candles, plants and knickknacks.
  • China cabinets These are tall, multi-shelf cabinets with decorative wood and glass doors that allow you to display fine china, crystal and family heirlooms in a safe, dust-free environment.
  • Bakers' racks Bakers' racks can either go in a kitchen or dining area, and are tall, narrow metal racks for placing pots, pans and other kitchen tools on. Some have hooks for hanging pots and pans, and all have two or three shelves for storage. Some also come with a wine bottle rack.
  • Bars, bar cabinets and wine cabinets Safely and discreetly store your alcohol and wine bottles behind a freestanding bar or bar/wine cabinet. These make alcohol, mixers, bar tools and glasses accessible when company drops by. Wine cabinets put your wine collection on display, allowing you to lay the bottles down to help preserve them. These cabinets hold as few as 6 bottles of wine to as many as 40 or more.
