Plastic split in half

This chair is comfortable and I like that it does not tip back and actually locks in place. However, I have only had this chair a few weeks and the two plastic pieces on the bottom that hold the foot rest in are already broken. Split right in half. I'm not sure why they would use plastic for these pieces and not metal? Metal would be much more durable.
