self watering pot, too big for most Nursery plants

This ceramic self-watering planter is attractive and functional, with a clean square shape that looks nice indoors. The ceramic outer pot has a smooth finish and feels solid, and the self-watering design is more thoughtful than a simple cachepot setup. Water is added to the bottom container, and the unglazed portion of the inner pot allows moisture to seep through the clay so the plant can draw up what it needs. That setup helps prevent overwatering and lowers the risk of root rot as long as the plant is matched to the correct pot size. This planter is too large for most newly purchased African violets from nurseries, since many of those are sold in 4 inch pots even though the plants themselves are usually nowhere near wide enough for that size. For African violets, the pot diameter should be about one third of the plant’s leaf span, so a 6 inch wide plant should be in about a 2 inch pot, a 9 inch wide plant in about a 3 inch pot, and a 12 inch wide plant in about a 4 inch pot. I have a violet that is easily 12 inches wide, and that is the kind of plant size I’d use this for. Overall, this is a nice-looking self-watering planter, but it is better suited to a more mature violet or another plant with a larger root system than the average nursery starter.

Perfect Fit, Ignore Listed Dimensions

I chose this ceramic pot for an orchid arrangement on my coffee table. One issue I ran into was inconsistent sizing in the product description. It lists both 6" x 6" x 4.9" and 8" x 8" x 7.5", which made it hard to know what to expect. For accuracy, the actual dimensions (including the inner pot) are 6" x 6" x 4.75" high. (The inner pot measures 5.25" in diameter and 3.75" high.) As it turned out, these dimensions were almost identical to my previous pot, so transferring the plant was effortless. The color is off-white rather than bright white, which worked well for my project. I added small felt pads to the bottom of the pot to protect my table. Overall, this worked perfectly for my needs, and I’d rate it 5/5.

I have not decided what I am going to plant. I was a little worried because bottom of the innder pot seemed solid to me. According to Google the inner pot has microscopic holes. I poured water in the glaze pot and the bottom of the inner pot is actually moist and cool. It is a bigger pot than it looks in the picture I hope my picture accurately reflected that. It should give my plant ample room for the roots to spread. They call these African violets pots because they don't like to get their leaves wet. But I think I'm going to try for a herb. I think it is very pretty and will add a pop of color to my kitchen windowsill.
