When people say a clock "ticks," they’re talking about the sound made by a step movement—the second hand jumps once per second, creating an audible tick. Many analog wall and desk clocks use this quartz step movement. If you prefer quiet, look for wording like “silent,” “non-ticking,” or “sweep movement” in the product title or description. Those models use a continuous sweep second hand designed to reduce or eliminate the ticking sound. On Walmart.com, you’ll see both styles—classic ticking and silent sweep—so you can choose what feels right for your space and sound sensitivity.

• Ticking: step movement with audible sound
• Silent/non-ticking: sweep movement for quieter operation

Everyone’s noise tolerance is different. Some people find a gentle tick calming, while others notice every click. If you’re a light sleeper, clocks labeled “silent,” “non-ticking,” or “silent sweep” can help minimize noise in a bedroom. Placement matters too—setting the clock farther from the bed can reduce any sound you might hear. Consider the display: a luminous dial or backlight can be easier on the eyes than a bright, always-on screen. For those who need a strong wake-up, twin-bell or “loud alarm” styles may be more effective. Results vary by person; if sleep issues persist, it may help to consult a healthcare professional for personalized guidance.

The common term for clock sounds is “tick” (as in tick-tock). You’ll often see product descriptions use “ticking” for traditional step movements or “non-ticking” for quiet sweep movements. The word “tic” usually refers to an involuntary muscle twitch, not a clock. So, when you’re browsing Walmart’s selection, phrases like “silent non-ticking” clearly indicate a design meant to reduce the familiar tick sound. If you enjoy that classic rhythmic noise, standard ticking models are also available. Choosing between ticking and non-ticking comes down to personal preference and where you plan to use the clock.

Start by noting the listed diameter (you’ll see sizes like 8", 10", 12", 24" in the titles) and match it to your wall space and viewing distance. As a general guide, smaller rooms or tight spots often suit 8–12 inch clocks, while larger walls or open-concept spaces may work better with oversized designs. Think about readability, too—high-contrast numerals and clear dials help from across the room. Finally, check product details for overall dimensions and any hanging information so you can use appropriate wall hardware. This approach can help you pick a clock that fits your decor and is easy to read.

For humid spaces, look for models described as “bathroom,” “waterproof,” or “water-resistant”—some are even marketed as shower clocks. These designs are built to handle moisture better than standard decor clocks. If a clock isn’t labeled for bathroom use, it’s advisable to keep it in drier areas of the home. When installing, place it away from direct water spray and steam if possible, and wipe off condensation as needed. Many bathroom-friendly clocks are battery operated, which helps avoid cords near water. Always review the product description for any moisture or placement guidance to match your specific bathroom environment.
