A nut shell is the hard outer covering that surrounds the edible kernel. It forms naturally to protect the seed during growth, transport, and storage. On this page, you'll find many whole nuts sold with shells intact.

• Purpose: Helps guard the kernel from physical damage and exposure.
• Texture: Shells vary in hardness and thickness, which affects how you crack them.
• Shopping tip: Look for terms like in-shell or whole to get nuts with their natural shell, then crack and enjoy when you're ready.

You'll find a wide variety of in-shell options here. Availability can vary, but commonly stocked choices include:

• Peanuts in-shell, in salted or unsalted styles
• Pistachios in-shell, in unsalted, lightly salted, or seasoned varieties
• Walnuts in-shell, usually whole
• Pecans in-shell, raw
• Hazelnuts (filberts) in-shell
• Almonds in-shell or shelled options
• Brazil nuts in-shell
• Mixed nuts assortments that include several in-shell varieties

Use filters and product titles to quickly spot in-shell items.

Match the product to how you plan to snack or cook. These tips can help you decide:

• Raw vs. roasted: Raw is great for recipe prep or home roasting; roasted is ready to eat.
• Seasoning: Choose salted, unsalted, or seasoned flavors like salt and pepper based on taste.
• Bag size: Single-serve to bulk bags are available. Check the weight in ounces or pounds.
• Packaging: Resealable bags can help keep nuts fresher after opening.
• Variety: Go single nut for a specific flavor, or pick mixed nuts for assortment.

Cracking techniques can vary by nut type, but a careful, simple approach works well:

• Use a tool: A nutcracker applies steady, controlled pressure.
• Leverage seams: Many nuts have a natural seam; applying pressure there can help.
• Work tidy: Crack over a bowl or towel to catch shell pieces, and discard shells promptly.
• Pistachios tip: Use an empty half shell to gently pry open split shells.
• Check labels: Some packages include handling notes specific to that nut.

Go slowly to reduce shell fragments and protect the kernel inside.

The main differences are preparation and flavor:

• Raw: Unroasted and typically unseasoned. A flexible choice for cooking projects, home roasting, or methods like boiling peanuts when noted on the package.
• Roasted: Heated for a toasty flavor and ready to snack. Options include unsalted or seasoned varieties like lightly salted or salt and pepper.
• Label cues: Product titles clearly call out raw, roasted, salted, or unsalted so you can choose quickly.

Pick based on how you plan to enjoy them and the flavor profile you prefer.
