This ceramic self-watering planter is attractive and functional, with a clean square shape that looks nice indoors. The ceramic outer pot has a smooth finish and feels solid, and the self-watering design is more thoughtful than a simple cachepot setup. Water is added to the bottom container, and the unglazed portion of the inner pot allows moisture to seep through the clay so the plant can draw up what it needs. That setup helps prevent overwatering and lowers the risk of root rot as long as the plant is matched to the correct pot size. This planter is too large for most newly purchased African violets from nurseries, since many of those are sold in 4 inch pots even though the plants themselves are usually nowhere near wide enough for that size. For African violets, the pot diameter should be about one third of the plant’s leaf span, so a 6 inch wide plant should be in about a 2 inch pot, a 9 inch wide plant in about a 3 inch pot, and a 12 inch wide plant in about a 4 inch pot. I have a violet that is easily 12 inches wide, and that is the kind of plant size I’d use this for. Overall, this is a nice-looking self-watering planter, but it is better suited to a more mature violet or another plant with a larger root system than the average nursery starter.
