Just wave your hand and it opens and then closes on its own. Four AA batteries provide the power and will last for about a year. I don't know if it was the angle of the picture on the page but can looked taller and slimmer, which is what drew me to it. I was somewhat disappointed in the height. My previous can was taller and I did receive as a gift so it may have been a bigger size than a 13 gallon. I was expecting a can tall like my previous one. The 13 gallon trash bags I use was a tight tight fit but using the smart ring made it work out ok. I was put off by the reviews mentioning some received dented can but that wasn't true. My can was boxed and packed very well. I will have to get use to the height because it's really a nice can and it should be big enough for me
