A self-propelled lawn mower uses a drive system that moves the mower forward with minimal effort from you. When you engage the handle, the wheels turn automatically, so you just guide the mower rather than push it. This feature can make mowing easier, especially on larger or uneven lawns. Most models let you adjust the speed, so you can mow at a comfortable pace. Always check the user manual for specific instructions and safety tips for your mower.

• Gas-powered mowers typically offer longer run times and more power, making them suitable for larger yards or tougher grass. They require fuel, oil changes, and regular maintenance.
• Battery-powered mowers are quieter, produce no emissions, and are easier to start. They’re ideal for smaller to medium lawns and need to be recharged between uses. Consider your yard size and maintenance preferences when choosing between the two types.

Most self-propelled lawn mowers feature a lever or knob near the wheels that lets you change the cutting height. You can usually select from several positions to get the grass length you prefer. To adjust, simply move the lever to the desired setting for each wheel or use a central adjustment if your mower has one. Always make sure the mower is off and the blades have stopped before making any changes.

• Many self-propelled mowers offer multiple options for handling grass clippings, including mulching, bagging, or side discharge.
• Mulching chops the grass into fine pieces and returns it to the lawn, which can help with soil health.
• Bagging collects clippings for easy disposal, while side discharge spreads them out as you mow.
• Check your mower’s features to see which options are available and follow the instructions for switching between modes.

1. Regularly clean the underside to prevent grass buildup.
2. Check and replace the air filter and spark plug if you have a gas model.
3. Sharpen or replace the blade as needed for a clean cut.
4. Inspect the drive system and wheels for wear.
5. For battery mowers, keep batteries charged and store them properly when not in use.

Following these steps can help keep your mower running smoothly and extend its lifespan.
