When making your bed, start with a fitted sheet. The fitted sheet is designed to hug your mattress snugly, thanks to its elastic edges, creating a smooth base for the rest of your bedding. After that, you can layer on a flat sheet, followed by blankets, comforters, or duvets. Drawstring sheets or deep pocket sheets are especially handy for keeping everything in place, especially on thicker mattresses. This order helps keep your bed comfortable and makes it easier to maintain cleanliness and freshness.

Sheets can turn yellow over time due to a mix of factors like sweat, body oils, and skin cells that naturally transfer during sleep. These substances can build up, especially if sheets aren’t washed regularly or if you use lighter colors.

• Washing sheets in warm water with gentle detergent can help reduce discoloration.
• Using mattress protectors and pillowcases adds an extra layer of defense.
• For stubborn stains, try soaking sheets in a solution of water and mild stain remover before washing.

Hospital corners are a simple way to give your bed a neat, crisp look. Here’s a quick trick:

1. Lay the flat sheet over the mattress.
2. Tuck the sheet along the foot of the bed.
3. Lift the side of the sheet to form a triangle, then tuck the hanging part under the mattress.
4. Fold the triangle down and tuck it in tightly.

Many people, especially younger generations, skip the top sheet for convenience. They prefer just a fitted sheet and a comforter or duvet, making bed-making and laundry simpler.

• Some feel top sheets get tangled or aren’t necessary for warmth.
• Others like the minimalist look and easier cleaning routine.

If your fitted sheet keeps slipping off, try these tips:

• Choose sheets with deep pockets or drawstring features—they’re designed to fit snugly on thicker mattresses.
• Make sure you’re using the correct size for your mattress.
• Elastic sheet straps or clips can help secure the corners.
