A cam lock is a simple locking mechanism commonly used to secure cabinets, drawers, mailboxes, lockers, and toolboxes. It consists of a base (the cylinder) and a metal plate called the "cam" that rotates when you turn the key or dial. Cam locks are popular for their versatility and ease of installation. They're a great choice for adding an extra layer of security to furniture, storage compartments, and even some doors. If you need a straightforward way to keep your belongings safe, cam locks offer a practical solution for many everyday applications.

Yes, cam locks are sometimes called cylinder locks or panel locks, depending on where they're used. In furniture assembly, you might also hear them referred to as furniture connecting locks or cabinet locks. The name often changes based on the specific application, but they all work on the same basic principle—a rotating cam that secures a door or panel. Knowing these alternate names can help you find the right hardware when shopping or searching for replacement parts.

To remove a cam lock from furniture, you'll usually need a screwdriver and, if it's a keyed lock, the key. Here’s a quick guide:

• Open the lock using the key or combination.
• Locate the retaining nut or screw on the back of the lock.
• Unscrew the nut or fastener while holding the lock steady.
• Slide the cam lock out from the front of the panel.

Be sure to keep all parts together in case you want to reinstall or replace the lock. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific lock type.

Cam locks can be a solid option for cabinets if you’re looking for a balance of security and convenience. They’re easy to install, don’t require complex tools, and work well for keeping items secure in home, office, or workshop cabinets. While they may not offer high-security protection for valuables, they’re ideal for everyday use where you want to prevent casual access or keep things organized. Consider your security needs and the type of cabinet before choosing a cam lock solution.

Choosing the right size cam lock depends on the thickness of the panel or door you’re securing. Here’s what to check:

• Measure the panel thickness where the lock will be installed.
• Look for cam locks with a cylinder length that matches or slightly exceeds your measurement.
• Consider the cam length and rotation angle to ensure it fits your cabinet or drawer design.

Most product listings include sizing details, so double-check before purchasing. If you’re unsure, bring your measurements to the store or consult the product specs online for guidance.
