The "15A" marking on a plug or outlet stands for 15 amps, which is the maximum amount of electrical current the device is designed to handle safely. Most standard household outlets in the U.S. are rated for 15 amps and 125 volts. Using a device with a higher current draw than the outlet's rating can be unsafe. Always check your appliances' requirements to make sure they're compatible with your outlets and plugs.

Most homes in the U.S. are wired with 15-amp circuits, so a 15A plug or outlet is generally compatible with standard wall outlets.

• Check your existing outlets—if they have two vertical slots and a round grounding hole, they're likely 15A.
• If you're unsure, consult a licensed electrician before installation or replacement.

15A plugs and outlets are designed for typical household devices like lamps, fans, and electronics. Heavy appliances—such as large air conditioners or power tools—may require outlets rated for higher amperage (like 20A).

• Check your appliance's manual for its power requirements.
• Never exceed the outlet's rated amperage to avoid overheating or tripping breakers.

Tamper-resistant outlets have built-in safety shutters that block foreign objects from being inserted, helping to reduce the risk of electrical shock—especially in homes with children.

• They look similar to regular outlets but offer added protection.
• Many building codes now require tamper-resistant outlets in new homes and renovations.

To safely replace a 15A outlet or plug:

1. Turn off power at the circuit breaker before starting.
2. Use a voltage tester to confirm the power is off.
3. Follow the instructions included with your new outlet or plug.
4. If you’re not comfortable working with electrical wiring, consider hiring a licensed electrician.
