Perfect Machine
This is a great machine! I love everything about it. But before I go on about everything I love, there is one thing that I was disappointed about. On page 76 in the manual they show a presser foot which is called a "side cutter". It is listed as presser foot "S". And the serial # for it is SA177. I would have LOVED to have had this presser foot included. (Also, if you look at the stitches which are shown on the front of the machine, you will see that the last 5 stitches (stitch numbers 63, 64, 65, 66 and 67) have an "S" by them . . . this is because they are specifically for this presser foot attachment, which is NOT included.) I called Brother to inquire on this presser foot, "S" as well as another presser foot "Q" (for quilting). The quilting presser foot "Q" was $9.73, but the presser foot "S" was $51.99!! I thought that was quite a bit for a presser foot! That would end up being 1/7th of the total cost of the machine! I asked them why this presser foot was so expensive, but the customer service people I spoke with did not know. The reason I would love to have the side cutter presser foot is because it does some of the same stitches that a serger does. And it cuts the fabric as it sews. I did search on walmart.com for this same presser foot and it is $35.00, so I will order it through Walmart. NOW FOR THE THINGS I LOVE . . . most specifically . . . the automatic threader. It is so much easier than other brands' of machines I have tried. I love the embroidery options. On other machines, the options were so limited. This machine has 5 different fonts. You can make them quite large (or small if you like). There is also a section with fancy lettering if you want to do just initials or one letter. There is just so much available on this machine that I am excited to sew with it. I have been sewing for 25 years and this machine leaves me wanting for nothing more . . . except for that side cutter presser foot attachment!!!

I bought the se-400 not really thinking it would be such a great machine, boy was I surprized. I am 74 so it probably took me a little longer to get sewing on it than the younger generation, because I had to keep refering to the book for instructions. Wow automatic needle threader, never knew there was such a thing. I've seen peoples comments that its not a heavy machine,it seems to be to me. I can run the machine at top speed and it stays put. Learning the embroidery now and love it. All the instructions are easy to understand and with pictures. I was a little afraid to use the computerized part of the machine but it is so easy to learn. My only regret is that now I wished I had bought a bigger model as I love to sew and have 17 grandchildren, lost track of how many great and great, great children. If your a sewer and emboiderer this is a great machine as well for the beginner embroiderer like me. You will not be disappointed.
FABULOUS! (although the manual is lacking)
I just purchased this last night to embroider some quilt squares. I read the manual and watched the DVD. Still yet, each time I tried to embroider the thread knotted up underneath the needle above the bobbin. It was so bad that I had to cut the fabric out - that is what fabric hadn't been ripped and shredded being caught up in the mess. I was packing it back up in the box frustrated today that I had spent the ENTIRE day wasting time, and fabric, trying to make this thing work when I noticed the slider on the lower back of the machine. It's the slider that raises and lowers the grips that move the fabric along while sewing. Low and behold, the grips were in the RAISED position. Thinking this was surely the problem, that the grips were snagging the thread and fabric as the hoop moved along, I decided to give it one more shot. Thank goodness I did. I pushed the slider to the lowered position and VIOLA!! Problem solved!! Now, anything I've tried to embroider - with or without using stablizer - had been perfection. I tried several different fabrics including cotton, denim, terry cloth, and a poly/cotton blend. They all came out perfectly. I also tried using cheap non-brand thread and then embroidery thread. Absolutely no difference whatsoever. What DOES matter is making sure those grips are lowered!! I went online and downloaded a few designs and was pleasantly surprised at how simple it was. I thought I had surely skipped a few steps or that they hadn't saved because it was that simple. They were all there and have worked wonderfully this evening. So, back to the quilting squares I went. It works so seemlessly (of course now that the grips were lowered - which, by the way, the manual said NOTHING about) that I have stepped away from it all evening while it's running. I turn it on, get it started, and walk away to work on other things around the house. When it beeps letting me know it's ready for a thread color change (which is remarkably simply) or that it's finished I change it out and keep going. Now that I figured out what was causing my thread and fabric to snag up and/or tear, I'm thrilled with this machine. This was my first attempt at embroidering and I'm so glad it is this easy.
