Review of SE400 Combination Sewing/Embroidery Machine
I love to sew. After I retired from my job, I started to teach beginning sewing from my home mostly as a hobby and to earn spending money to buy more sewing stuff. The students often ask me to recommend a good sewing/embroidery machine that would be easy for a beginner to use and understand. I have a Brother machine that is big and expensive and not conducive to a beginning sewer. For her birthday we purchased my granddaughter a new sewing machine from Walmart (SE400 Combination) and she loves it! I ask her to let me use it for a week and see for myself if I would recommend it to my students when they asked.
I watched the included CD, and then I put it into action. I made a wearable blouse that included sleeves, button holes, and a decorative embroidery design. The diagram for threading and bobbin winding printed on the machine was an important feature because a lot of my students are very nervous and some are very young. This small detail was very helpful.
The easy threader worked every time and is a real time saver.
Sewing a straight seam was made easier with all the printed guides on the needle plate. I didn’t use any of the fancy built in stitches except for the zig zag on the inside of the blouse seams. But, I could not resist trying a few of them to see how they would work. I was not disappointed.
The one-step button hole must have been invented in heaven. I sewed on my old machine for years before I had the courage to make anything with a buttonhole. As you can see it was so easy to use I got carried away and made more than I needed.
The embroidery unit worked extremely well, but in order to use the designs I could purchase or download free, I had to have a card reader. I could have used any of the beautiful built in designs but I wanted to test all possibilities. My granddaughter showed me how to use a PED Basic to download the cat design I wanted. This would be an extra and unexpected expense for a beginner.
Overall, I found the PE400 to be the perfect machine for a beginning sewer or someone who just wants to sew and have fun doing it!
If I could rate the SE400, I would give it 100%.
