Short Girls Rejoice!

Hopefully these measurements and photographs will help you decide if this is the right boot for you. I purchased a size 7. The short height was not an option, so these were the regular height boots. I am five feet tall. I have a small (size 6 - 1/2) but wide foot with a very tall meaty instep, 9 1/2" ankles, and 16" calves. My leg measures 14-1/2" around at the bend of my knee, where the top of the boot would sit. From the floor to the crease of my knee is 15-3/4". I measured the inside (horse side) of the boot vertically as 17-1/2" from floor to top of boot. The Spanish Cut (outside edge) of the boot is 19-1/4" from the floor to the tallest part of the boot. The size chart says that they are 18-3/4". So here is how the boot fit my legs. These Tuffrider Plus Rider Field Boots have a roomy and very wide toe box, maybe half a size larger than a typical size 7. Plenty of room for two pairs of socks or extra insoles. The soles were actually quite comfortable to walk in. The ankles were a little on the loose side! The insteps were very generous and did not bind at all! The calves are a comfortable loosely snug fit. The boots were a little loose at the knee. I can insert my hand up to the wrist on the outside (taller) edge of the boot. The height of the boot is a little dilemma: the pair I received are already supple and creased at the ankle. I just don't know if the boots in the regular height will drop the extra inch or so to not rub the back of my knee. The fabric inside the boot (see photo) seems breatheable, and the seams are not rubbing or irritating. The only part of the boot that rubs in the slightest is where the zipper hits my heel its lowest point. Now the negatives: I am afraid that as the boots soften and sink, the zipper will continue to buckle and possibly become difficult to operate or worse, separate. The quality of the manufacturing left a little to be desired, the stitching at the top of the boots has drawn and puckered the leather. Also the pair I received have a strong crease all the way down the shin area of the left boot and it appears to be an original defect. My biggest concern about this boot is the grippy material on the inner calf. Just trying the boot on, I managed to rub black marks on my bedspread and a new riding shirt. Everything it touches gets marked up. I am afraid to wear these boots to my lessons or friends' barns, because I don't want to get black marks all over their saddles. For those reasons I will be returning this particular pair of boots. If I had my own saddle and didn't mind the black marks, I would probably keep them because it's very difficult to find tall boots for short legs with wide measurements.

Disappointed

I waited patiently for these boots to come out since I figured it was probably my last hope for plus sized tall boots. I tried Fuller Fillies and they were still too small in the calf. My calves are very nearly 20" each and there is no way to make the FF boots work, so when these came along I was super excited to try them! So here comes the good news. I ordered a size 9 and they DID zip up but just barely. Great so far... until I zipped them all the way to the top and realized that they are a good 3" TOO SHORT. These weren't even the short sized boots I ordered, and the size chart said 18 3/4" tall so in theory they should have fit me since my lower leg height measures just barely 18". I wish i had a measuring tape so i could measure the true height of these but they are most definitely not 18 3/4" tall... even accounting for the heel. If they drop even a little bit they will look ridiculous as they are already way too short. So these boots are truly for shorter people seeing as I'm 5'7" and thats really not THAT tall. As far as the craftsmanship goes these boots aren't too bad. The leather is nice and soft and it looks like the elastic in the back allows for plenty of stretch (although I wonder how long it will hold up seeing as it IS very similar looking to spandex). The lining of the boots are pretty comfortable and the zipper is sturdy looking too. There was some glue or something that started to come undone near the edge of the zipper as i zipped it up, but i'm not sure if it was anything more than the glue to hold the leather around the zipper down for appearance sake. The area near the top of the boot with the tab thats sew down looks terrible. Its all pocked and not smooth looking at all. I'm not sure why they put the tab on like this because all it did was make the leather look wrinkly. Not very pretty if you want to show in them at some point. All I can do is hope they come out with taller ones, so with a heavy heart these will be going back to Smartpak... :(

Huge calf? No problem!

I bought these boots a few months ago. I've literally tried every other plus size/wide boot out there and these have been the only boots that have fit me (other than half chaps). I'm really happy I found these. They are a bit big in the ankle (probably due to such a large calf) but it doesn't cause any discomfort- they look like any other tall boot from the saddle. They don't leave any marks on my saddle and seem to be durable (though mine don't have that many rides so I can't speak to their durability).
