Too bad these reviews require at least one star

I guess I must be stupid, I can't figure out how the metal clasps work that are supposed to make these things adjustable. They have teeth that I guess are supposed to bite into the straps to keep them from slipping through. What tools are required to make that happen? A sledge hammer? An elephant? No, they don't simply hold themselves in place once you put them on and adjust them, that's the first thing I tried.
