I recently paired this Kestrel reel with a light-tackle spinning rod for both lake crappie outings and a recent ice-fishing trip, and the results have been impressive. The full carbon fiber frame is astonishingly light (weighs just 4.6 oz) yet doesn't sacrifice strength—thanks to quality internals like a 7075-T6 aluminum main shaft and a brass pinion gear. Casting finesse baits felt ultra-smooth and effortless, and the carbon‐fiber drag system delivered up to 10 lbs of stopping power that handled surprising fish sizes without stutter or slip. I had no problems dialing it down for panfish, nor did I feel undersized when hooked into a stronger fish during the ice session. If you're into finesse fishing (or even ice fishing) and want a reel that balances incredibly light weight with serious performance, this Kestrel model is a brilliant value. It's rare to find carbon body reels at this price point that feel this refined. The only note: if you're expecting a big-game reel, this is best suited for lighter setups and smaller species.
