Choosing the right pruning shears depends on what you plan to trim.

• Bypass shears are great for live branches and plants, offering clean cuts.
• Anvil shears work well for dead wood and tougher stems.
• Consider the cutting capacity—smaller shears handle thinner branches, while loppers tackle thicker ones.
• Look for ergonomic handles if you want extra comfort during longer gardening sessions.

Check the product descriptions for blade material and handle length to match your needs. If you’re unsure, browsing reviews can also help you decide.

To keep your pruning shears in top shape, follow these steps:

1. Wipe off dirt and sap after each use with a damp cloth.
2. For sticky residue, use mild soap and water, then dry thoroughly.
3. Apply a drop of oil to the blades and pivot point to prevent rust.
4. Store shears in a dry place.

Regular cleaning helps maintain sharpness and extends the life of your tools. Avoid soaking shears for long periods, as this can damage the blades and handles.

Pruning shears are designed for smaller branches, usually up to about 3/4 inch thick. For thicker branches, loppers or extendable branch cutters are a better fit.

• Check the cutting capacity listed in the product details to see what size branches each tool can handle.
• Using shears on branches that are too thick can damage the tool and make cutting harder.

If you need to tackle larger limbs, consider tools with longer handles and higher cutting capacity.

Keeping your pruning shears sharp makes gardening easier and safer.

• Use a sharpening stone or tool to gently hone the blade edge.
• Clean the blades before sharpening to remove debris.
• Sharpen only the beveled side, following the original angle.
• After sharpening, wipe the blade and apply a light oil.

Regular sharpening helps maintain clean cuts and prevents plant damage. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific tool.

Some pruning shears offer replacement blades, springs, or handles.

• Check the product listing or packaging for information on available parts.
• Many brands provide replacement parts online or through customer service.
• If you’re shopping at Walmart, you can search for compatible accessories or reach out to support for guidance.
