Choosing pruning shears depends on your gardening needs.

• If you're trimming live plants or soft stems, bypass pruners are a popular choice because their blades pass by each other for a clean cut.
• Anvil pruners work well for dry or dead branches, as they use a single blade against a flat surface.
• Consider handle comfort, grip, and blade material—features like non-slip handles and steel blades can make pruning easier.

Think about the size of your hands and the plants you'll be working with to find a tool that feels comfortable and effective for you.

Keeping your pruning shears clean helps them last longer and work better.

1. After each use, wipe the blades with a damp cloth to remove sap and debris.
2. For tougher residue, use mild soap and water, then dry thoroughly to prevent rust.
3. Occasionally, apply a drop of oil to the pivot point and blades to keep them moving smoothly.

Regular cleaning can help maintain sharpness and prevent plant diseases from spreading between cuts.

Pruning shears are designed for smaller branches and stems.

• Most hand pruners can handle branches up to about 3/4 inch thick, depending on the model.
• For thicker branches, you might want to use loppers or a saw for easier cutting and to avoid damaging your shears.

Always check the cutting capacity listed for your tool and avoid forcing it through branches that are too large.

Sharp pruning shears make gardening easier and help plants heal faster.

1. Use a sharpening stone or tool designed for garden blades to gently sharpen the cutting edge.
2. Clean the blades before sharpening to remove any dirt or sap.
3. After sharpening, wipe the blades and add a light coat of oil to protect against rust.

Regular maintenance can help your shears stay effective and safe to use.

Some pruning shears offer replacement parts like springs or blades, depending on the brand and model.

• Check the product packaging or manufacturer's website for details about available parts.
• Walmart may carry accessories or replacement items for popular gardening tools.

Keeping your shears in good condition can extend their life, so it's helpful to know if parts can be replaced when needed.
