Think about what you’re hanging and where. Different screw hooks are built for different jobs.

• Mugs and utensils: Choose small cup hooks (often around 7/8"–1-1/4") with light weight ratings listed on the product page. Vinyl-coated options can help protect finishes and reduce slipping under a shelf.
• Hanging plants or light fixtures: Look for ceiling or swag hooks with higher weight capacities. Many options are rated for drywall and wood; for heavier items, mounting into a joist is typically recommended.
• Decor and string lights: Q-style hangers with a safety clasp can offer added security.

Check each item’s listed weight capacity and included hardware before you buy. Using site filters for size, finish, and load rating can help you compare quickly.

Yes, with the right hardware and technique. Drywall alone doesn’t hold much weight, so pairing the hook with the proper anchor can help.

1. Match the load: Check the hook’s weight rating and use a drywall-compatible anchor if you’re not hitting a stud.
2. Find structure when possible: For heavier items, locate a wall stud or ceiling joist.
3. Prep the hole: Drill the pilot hole per the anchor’s instructions.
4. Install the anchor, then the hook: Hand-tighten until snug—avoid over-torquing.
5. Test gradually: Add weight slowly to confirm it’s secure.

Weight limits vary by product and wall condition, so review the product details and follow the included instructions for best results.

Many screw hooks are suitable for patios or porches, but outdoor conditions can shorten lifespan depending on finish and climate.

• Look for protective finishes: Zinc-plated, painted, or vinyl-coated hooks can offer added moisture resistance compared to bare steel.
• Match the task: For string lights or decorations, options with safety clasps can help keep lines secure in wind.
• Use appropriate anchors: For masonry, use expansion tubes or masonry anchors specified on the product page; for wood, predrilling can reduce splitting.
• Maintain: Inspect periodically and replace if you see corrosion or looseness.

Exposure and load needs vary outdoors, so choose hooks labeled for exterior use and follow the listed capacities.

A good rule is to drill a pilot hole slightly smaller than the hook’s core (the shaft without threads). This can help the threads bite without splitting the material.

• In wood: Use a bit just under the hook’s core diameter; harder woods may benefit from a bit closer to the core size.
• In drywall with anchors: Follow the anchor’s instructions for drill size—some are self-drilling and may not need a pilot hole.
• Install gently: Start the hook by hand; use a driver or pliers carefully if needed, stopping when snug.

Testing on a scrap piece first can help you dial in the fit.

Spacing depends on what you’re hanging and the look you want.

• String lights: Many people place hooks about 24–36 inches apart, adding extras at corners or where the line changes direction to reduce strain.
• Mugs under shelves: About 2.5–3 inches between cup hooks works for most handles; adjust based on your largest mug. Set hooks roughly 1–1.5 inches from the shelf edge for clearance.
• Hanging plants: Use one properly rated ceiling hook centered over the load, ideally into a joist. Spacing isn’t as important as secure placement.

Weights, cord thickness, and shelf depth vary, so adjust spacing to your items and check load ratings.
