A roller cover is the part of a paint roller that holds and applies paint to surfaces. It slips onto the roller frame and comes in different materials and nap lengths, which affect how much paint it holds and the finish it creates. Roller covers are designed for painting walls, ceilings, and other large areas quickly and evenly. Choosing the right cover can help you achieve a smooth or textured look, depending on your project. They're available in various sizes and types to match different paints and surfaces, making them a go-to tool for home improvement jobs.

For smooth walls, you'll want a roller cover with a short nap, usually around 1/4 to 3/8 inch.

• Short nap covers are made from materials like microfiber or woven polyester, which help create a sleek, even finish.
• They work well with latex or water-based paints and minimize lint or streaks.
• Using the right cover can make your paint job look more professional and reduce touch-ups.

When painting new drywall, a roller cover with a 3/8-inch nap is a popular choice.

• This nap length balances paint absorption and coverage, helping fill in minor surface imperfections.
• Microfiber or knit polyester covers are commonly used for this purpose.
• They provide good coverage without leaving too much texture, making them ideal for fresh drywall surfaces.

Some painters wrap tape around new roller covers to reduce loose fibers, also known as lint, before painting.

• The tape helps remove excess fuzz that could stick to your walls or ceilings.
• This step is especially useful with certain materials, like knit polyester, which may shed during first use.
• By prepping the roller cover, you can achieve a cleaner, smoother paint finish.

To clean and reuse roller covers, follow these steps:

1. Remove excess paint by rolling on scrap paper or cardboard.
2. Rinse the cover under warm water if you used water-based paint, or use the appropriate solvent for oil-based paint.
3. Squeeze out water or solvent and repeat until the cover runs clear.
4. Let the roller cover air dry completely before storing.
