To turn on your desktop computer, locate the power button on the front or top of your PC case. It’s usually marked with a circle and a vertical line (I/O symbol). Press the button once to start your computer. If you’re using an external power button or extension, make sure it’s securely connected to your motherboard’s power switch header.

• Check all cables are plugged in.
• Ensure your power supply is switched on.
• Press the power button firmly but gently.

If your PC doesn’t start, double-check connections or consult your user manual for troubleshooting tips.

The I and O symbols on a power button represent on and off states. The I (vertical line) means the device is powered on, while the O (circle) means it’s powered off. You’ll often see these symbols on switches for desktop computers, power supplies, and external power buttons.

• I = On
• O = Off

These universal icons help users quickly identify how to control their PC’s power, regardless of the device or language.

Sometimes a computer can power on unexpectedly due to settings or external triggers. Common reasons include:

• Wake-on-LAN enabled in BIOS or motherboard settings
• Scheduled tasks or updates
• Power outages causing automatic restart
• Connected peripherals (like keyboards or external power buttons) sending signals

If you want to prevent this, check your PC’s power management settings and disable features like Wake-on-LAN or automatic restart after power loss. Reviewing your external power button setup can also help avoid accidental startups.

Pressing the power button on your PC sends a signal to the motherboard, which then activates the power supply and starts the boot process. If your computer is already on, a quick press may put it to sleep or initiate shutdown, depending on your settings. With external power buttons or extensions, the process is the same—just make sure the button is properly connected.

• Short press: usually sleep or shutdown
• Long press: forces power off

Always check your PC’s manual for specific functions tied to the power button.

Yes, you can use an external power button to control your desktop computer. These devices connect to your motherboard’s power switch header and allow you to turn your PC on or off from a convenient location.

• Useful for hard-to-reach cases
• Often include LED indicators
• Easy plug-and-play installation

Make sure the external button is compatible with your motherboard and follow the included instructions for safe setup. External power buttons are great for custom builds, office setups, or gaming rigs.
