Choosing the right watercolor paper block depends on your painting style and project needs.

• Texture: Rough paper is great for expressive, textured effects, while hot-pressed is smoother for fine details.
• Weight: 140 lb is standard for most uses, but heavier paper (like 300 lb) can handle more water without warping.
• Size: Consider the size of your artwork and workspace. Smaller blocks are portable, larger ones offer more room to create.

Take a moment to think about how you paint and what you want to achieve, then match those needs to the options available.

Cold-pressed and hot-pressed watercolor papers offer distinct surfaces for artists.

• Cold-pressed: Has a slightly textured surface, making it versatile for both detailed work and washes. It’s a popular choice for beginners and professionals alike.
• Hot-pressed: Features a smooth finish, ideal for crisp lines and intricate details. It’s preferred for illustrations or when you want less texture in your painting.

Think about the effect you want in your artwork to decide which surface suits you best.

Watercolor blocks are glued on all four sides to help prevent warping while you paint. To remove a finished sheet, use a palette knife or similar tool to gently slide under the edge and separate it from the block.

• Start at the corner and work your way around.
• Be careful not to tear the paper.

This process helps keep your artwork flat and protected until you’re ready to display or frame it.

Proper storage keeps your watercolor paper blocks in great condition.

• Store them flat in a cool, dry place to prevent bending or moisture damage.
• Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause fading or yellowing over time.
• If possible, keep them in their original packaging or wrap them in acid-free paper for extra protection.

These steps can help maintain the quality of your paper for future projects.

Getting your watercolor block ready is simple.

• Make sure your hands are clean to avoid smudges.
• Set up your workspace so the block is flat and stable.
• Lightly sketch your design if needed, using a pencil that erases easily.

Since the block is glued on all sides, you don’t need to tape it down—just start painting! This setup helps minimize warping and keeps your paper secure as you work.
