Most carbon monoxide and smoke detector combos have a built-in low battery alert. You might hear a consistent chirping sound or see a warning on the digital display. Here’s what you can do:

• Check the display for battery icons or messages.
• Listen for beeping or chirping that’s different from the alarm sound.
• Some models have sealed batteries that last up to 10 years, so you won’t need to replace them often. Always refer to your device’s manual for specific battery information.

Keeping batteries fresh helps your detector work reliably.

For the best protection, install carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas. Consider these tips:

• Place alarms at least 5 feet above the floor, since carbon monoxide mixes with air.
• Avoid installing near vents, fans, or bathrooms to prevent false readings.
• Don’t put alarms inside cabinets or behind curtains.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific model to help ensure proper placement and performance.

Testing your detector is simple and helps you stay safe. Here’s how:

• Press and hold the test button on the device until you hear a loud beep or see the display light up.
• Check the digital display for any error codes or battery warnings.
• Test your alarm monthly to make sure it’s functioning properly.

If you notice any issues, consult the user manual or consider replacing the unit if it’s older than the recommended lifespan.

If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, it’s important to act quickly. Here are some steps to consider:

• Move everyone outside to fresh air right away.
• Call emergency services from a safe location.
• Don’t re-enter your home until it’s been checked by professionals.

Never ignore an alarm, even if you don’t feel symptoms. Regularly reviewing your alarm’s manual can help you prepare for emergencies.

Most carbon monoxide detectors are designed to last between 7 and 10 years, depending on the model. To keep your home safe:

• Check the manufacturer’s label for the recommended replacement date.
• Some alarms have a built-in end-of-life warning or display message.
• Replace the unit promptly when it reaches the end of its lifespan.

Regular replacement helps ensure your detector continues to provide reliable protection for your household.
