Straining cooked meat is simple with a kitchen strainer or colander.

• Place the meat in the strainer over a bowl or sink.
• Let excess liquid or grease drain away naturally.
• For ground meat, gently press with a spoon to remove more fat.

Using a fine mesh strainer can help catch smaller pieces, while a colander works well for larger chunks. Always allow the meat to cool slightly before handling to avoid burns. This method can help reduce grease and make your dish lighter.

Strainers are handy tools for separating liquids from solids.

• They’re used to drain pasta, rinse fruits and veggies, sift dry ingredients, or remove grease from cooked meat.
• Strainers come in various shapes and sizes, including mesh sieves and colanders.

Having a strainer makes meal prep easier and keeps your food texture just right. They’re a must-have for anyone who wants to cook efficiently and keep their kitchen organized.

Food strainers are often called colanders, sieves, or mesh strainers.

• A colander is usually a bowl-shaped tool with holes, perfect for draining pasta or rinsing produce.
• A sieve or mesh strainer has finer holes and is great for sifting flour or straining sauces.

Each type serves a slightly different purpose, so you might see these names used interchangeably depending on the kitchen task.

If you don’t have a strainer handy, you can use alternatives like a slotted spoon, a lid held over a pot, or even clean cheesecloth for finer tasks.

• For pasta, tilt the pot and hold the lid to let water escape.
• For ground meat, use a spoon to scoop out excess fat.

These methods can help in a pinch, but a dedicated strainer is usually safer and more efficient for regular cooking.

Cleaning a mesh strainer is easiest if you rinse it right after use.

• Run warm water through the mesh to remove food particles.
• Use a soft brush or sponge to gently scrub away stuck bits.
• If needed, soak the strainer in soapy water for a few minutes.

Mesh strainers can be washed by hand or placed in the dishwasher if they’re dishwasher safe. Regular cleaning keeps your strainer in great shape and ready for your next meal.
