Large feathers are often called plumes or quills, depending on their size and use. Plumes typically refer to the long, decorative feathers found on birds like ostriches or peacocks, which are popular for crafts, centerpieces, and costume design. Quills are the sturdy, central shafts of large feathers that were historically used for writing. When shopping for large feathers for DIY projects or event decor, you’ll likely see them labeled as plumes, especially for items used in weddings or party arrangements.

Another common name for a large feather is a plume. You might also see terms like tail feather or flight feather depending on the bird and feather type. In crafting and decoration, "plume" is widely used for long, showy feathers from birds like ostriches, peacocks, or geese. These feathers are popular for adding flair to centerpieces, costumes, and DIY projects, and you’ll find a variety of them in bulk packs for creative uses.

The largest feathers usually come from birds like ostriches and peacocks. Ostrich plumes can reach lengths of over a foot, making them a favorite for dramatic decorations and floral arrangements. Peacock tail feathers are also quite long and feature eye-catching colors and patterns, perfect for crafts and event decor. These large feathers are often sold in bulk for weddings, parties, and DIY projects, offering plenty of options for creative expression.

Birds have four main types of feathers, each serving a different purpose:

• Contour feathers – Cover the body and give birds their shape.
• Down feathers – Soft and fluffy, these provide insulation.
• Flight feathers – Found on wings and tails, they help with flying.
• Semi-plume feathers – Located under contour feathers, they add extra insulation and shape.

For crafting, you’ll mostly find contour, flight, and decorative plumes, which are great for DIY projects and decorations.

Large feathers are super versatile for all kinds of crafts! Here are a few ideas:

• Centerpieces: Arrange them in vases for weddings or parties.
• Costume accents: Attach to hats, masks, or clothing for a bold look.
• Dreamcatchers: Use as hanging elements for a whimsical touch.
• Wall art: Glue onto canvases or wreaths for unique home decor.

Before starting, make sure the feathers are clean and dry. You can trim or dye them to fit your project, and most feathers can be glued, sewn, or wired in place depending on your design.
