Kitchen string—often called cooking or butcher’s twine—is a food-contact-safe cotton cord used to secure food while it cooks. It’s commonly used to truss poultry, tie roasts so they cook evenly, and bundle herbs for easy removal. Most options are plain, undyed, uncoated cotton, which helps it withstand typical oven temperatures without melting. You’ll find it in various lengths (for example, around 70 meters or a few hundred feet) and thicknesses, on spools or center-pull balls, sometimes with handy dispensers. On Walmart.com, look for product titles or descriptions that mention “cooking twine,” “butcher’s twine,” or “food-safe” to match heat-contact kitchen needs.

The key differences come down to material, treatment, and heat use:

• Material: Kitchen twine is typically plain 100% cotton. Regular string can be jute, hemp, polypropylene, or blends.
• Treatments: Kitchen versions are generally undyed and uncoated. Craft or household string may have dyes, coatings, or finishes not intended for food contact.
• Heat behavior: Non-cotton strings (like polypropylene) can melt or give off odors near heat. Cotton twine is widely used for oven applications.
• Labeling: Listings that say “cooking,” “butcher’s,” or “food-safe” are intended for kitchen tasks. If it isn’t labeled for cooking, it’s best to keep it for crafts or general household use.

If you don’t have cooking twine, a few workarounds can help, depending on the recipe:

• Tuck and fold: Tuck poultry wings/legs under the body to keep a compact shape.
• Skewers or toothpicks: Use a few to hold seams in place, then remove before serving. Keep away from direct flame/broiling.
• Foil or parchment assists: Create a loose foil band around a roast or wrap a roll in parchment to help it hold form.

For oven cooking, cotton cooking twine remains the most reliable option. Household strings like nylon, polypropylene, or jute may melt, scorch, or shed fibers, so they’re better for crafts, not direct cooking. Results vary by method, so monitor closely and remove non-edible items before serving.

You’ve got flexible options:

• Online: Search Walmart.com for “kitchen twine,” “butcher’s twine,” or “cooking string.” Use filters like length, material, or pack size.
• In store: Check the kitchen tools/gadgets area, near bakeware, or in crafts where twine is stocked. Availability can vary by location.
• Pickup and delivery: Many areas offer same-day pickup or delivery—choose what’s convenient at checkout.

When browsing, look for listings that clearly state “food-safe,” “cooking,” or “butcher’s” twine so you’re set for heat-contact tasks. If you’re planning multiple cookouts or holidays, consider longer spools to reduce reorders.

It depends on how the twine is made and labeled. Many baker’s twines are decorative and may be dyed or coated, which isn’t ideal for high-heat, direct food-contact cooking. Unless a product states food-safe and suitable for cooking/oven use, it’s better to choose plain, undyed, uncoated 100% cotton cooking twine for roasting. Colored baker’s twine is great for gift wrapping or crafts, and some baking tasks (like securing parchment) may not require heat-rated cord. To stay on the safe side, check the product details on Walmart.com and select an option specifically intended for cooking.
