Folder tabs are small, often colorful labels or extensions that stick out from the edge of a file folder or divider. They're designed to help you quickly identify and organize documents by category, date, or any system you prefer. Many tabs are write-on or come with inserts, so you can label them with names, numbers, or topics. Using folder tabs can make it much easier to find what you need at a glance, especially in busy offices, classrooms, or home filing systems.

Adding tabs to file folders is simple and can help keep your documents organized.

1. Choose the type of tab you want—self-adhesive, clip-on, or insertable.
2. For adhesive tabs, peel off the backing and stick the tab to the folder's edge where you want it.
3. For insertable tabs, slide the tab into the pre-cut slot on a hanging folder and add your label.
4. Write or print your label, then attach it to the tab for easy identification.

Most folders can be customized with tabs, but the method depends on the folder type.

• Standard file folders work well with self-adhesive or stick-on tabs.
• Hanging folders usually have slots for insertable plastic tabs.
• Some folders, like plastic or specialty designs, may require tabs designed for smooth surfaces.

Folders with built-in tabs are often called tabbed folders or file folders with tabs. These folders have tabs already integrated into their design, so you don't need to add separate labels. They come in different tab positions—left, center, or right—to help you stagger labels for better visibility. Tabbed folders are popular for quick setup and easy organization in offices, schools, or home filing systems.

Choosing the right folder tab style depends on how you plan to organize your files.

• Write-on tabs are great for quick labeling and frequent changes.
• Insertable tabs let you swap out labels as your system changes.
• Colorful or patterned tabs can help you color-code by category or priority.
• Plastic tabs are durable for heavy use, while paper tabs are ideal for light sorting.
