Choosing the right size screen spline is important for a secure fit. Start by checking your window or door frame's groove width—this is where the spline sits. Most splines are measured in inches or millimeters, so use a ruler or caliper for accuracy. If you're replacing an old spline, bring a small piece with you to compare. It's common for screen spline sizes to range from about 0.09" to 0.285" in diameter. If you're unsure, slightly larger splines can sometimes be compressed to fit, but too large may not work. Always double-check your frame's specifications before purchasing.

• Spline roller: This tool helps press the spline into the frame groove smoothly.
• Scissors or utility knife: You'll need these to cut the spline to the right length.
• Flathead screwdriver: Useful for removing old spline or adjusting the screen material.
• Measuring tape: Helps ensure you cut the correct length of spline and screen.

Having these basic tools on hand can make the installation process easier and help you achieve a neat, secure finish.

It's usually best to use new screen spline when replacing window or door screens. Over time, spline can become brittle, stretched, or lose its grip, which may affect how well your new screen stays in place. New spline is more flexible and provides a tighter seal. If your old spline is still in good shape and fits the groove snugly, you might be able to reuse it, but for the most reliable results, consider picking up a fresh roll during your project.

• Choose the correct size: Make sure your spline fits the groove tightly without being forced.
• Press firmly: Use a spline roller to press the spline evenly into the groove, ensuring it sits below the frame's surface.
• Check for even tension: Keep the screen material taut but not overstretched as you work.
• Trim excess: Cut off any extra spline at the end for a clean finish.

Following these tips can help your screen spline stay secure and your screen look great.

Round and flat screen splines are designed for different frame types. Round spline is cylindrical and fits into grooves with a rounded profile, while flat spline is more rectangular and works with frames that have a flat groove. The choice depends on your window or door frame's design. Always check your frame's groove shape before buying, as using the wrong type can make installation difficult or result in a loose fit.
