There are several common types of locks you might find for doors and gates:

• Deadbolts: Often used for exterior doors, these provide strong security by extending a solid bolt into the door frame.
• Knob locks: Built into door knobs, these are common for interior doors but are less secure on their own for exterior use.
• Lever handle locks: Frequently used in commercial settings, these are easier to operate and can be paired with other locks for added security.
• Padlocks and hasps: These are versatile and can be used with a clasp or hasp to secure gates, sheds, or cabinets. Choosing the right lock depends on your security needs and where you plan to use it.

A latch and a clasp lock serve similar purposes but have key differences:

• Latch: Typically refers to a simple mechanism that holds a door, gate, or cabinet closed. Latches can be spring-loaded or manually operated and may not always require a key or padlock.
• Clasp lock: Usually involves a hinged metal plate (hasp) and a loop (staple) where you can attach a padlock for extra security. Clasp locks are ideal when you want to add a locking option to doors, gates, or boxes. The main difference is that a clasp lock is designed to work with a padlock, while a latch may not always offer that feature.

A "monkey latch" is a casual term sometimes used for a simple hook-and-eye latch or a swinging arm latch. These are commonly used to secure lightweight doors, gates, or cabinets. They work by hooking a metal arm or hook into an eye or catch, holding the door closed. Monkey latches are popular for:

• Garden gates
• Cabin doors
• Small storage boxes

They're easy to use and install, making them a handy option for quick, basic security where heavy-duty locks aren't needed.

Law enforcement often recommends using multiple layers of security for home doors. Here are some commonly suggested options:

• Deadbolt locks: These provide strong resistance to forced entry.
• Reinforced strike plates: Upgrading the plate where the lock bolt enters the frame can help prevent kick-ins.
• Door chains or swing bar locks: These add an extra layer of security when you want to open the door partially.
• Padlock hasps: For sheds, gates, or exterior storage, using a hasp with a sturdy padlock can help deter unauthorized access.

Combining different types of locks can help improve overall home security.

Choosing the right clasp lock for your gate depends on a few factors:

• Material: Look for rust-resistant materials like stainless steel or zinc-plated steel if your gate is outdoors.
• Size: Make sure the clasp lock fits your gate's thickness and mounting space.
• Security level: For higher security, select a clasp lock that works with a padlock and has a sturdy design.
• Ease of installation: Some clasp locks come with all the necessary hardware for quick setup.

Consider where you'll use the lock and how much security you need to find the best fit for your gate.
