The borders on picture frames are commonly called mats or mouldings. The mat is the inner border, usually made of paper or cardboard, that surrounds your photo and adds a decorative touch. The moulding is the outer edge of the frame itself, which can come in a variety of styles, widths, and finishes. Both elements help highlight your artwork or photo, and they can be mixed and matched to suit your décor or personal taste.

There are a few easy ways to add a border to your photo:

• Use a matted picture frame: Choose a frame with a mat to create a clean, professional border around your image.
• DIY matting: Purchase a separate mat board and cut it to fit your frame and photo size.
• Decorative frames: Select a frame with an ornate or textured moulding to add visual interest and a built-in border effect.

These options can help your photo stand out and complement your space.

When a frame has a border inside, it’s called a mat or mat board. The mat sits between your photo and the frame, creating a visual space that draws attention to the image and protects it from touching the glass. Mats come in different colors and thicknesses, so you can choose one that matches your style or the artwork you’re displaying.

Choosing the right border style depends on your décor and the photo’s vibe:

• Classic and simple: Go for thin, neutral borders for a timeless look.
• Ornate or decorative: Try wide or embellished borders for a statement piece.
• Modern spaces: Sleek, minimal frames with thin borders work well.
• Gallery walls: Mix and match border styles for a curated effect.

Consider the room’s style and what you want to highlight in your photo when selecting a border.
