Using a sharpening stone block is pretty straightforward. First, place the stone on a stable, non-slip surface. If your stone needs water or oil, add a few drops to the surface. Hold your knife at a consistent angle—usually around 15 to 20 degrees—and gently slide the blade across the stone, moving from heel to tip. Repeat this motion several times on each side, switching between the coarse and fine grit if your stone has both. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for best results and safety.

The grit you choose depends on your knife’s condition and your sharpening goals.

• Coarse grit (around 300-400): Great for repairing dull or damaged blades.
• Medium grit (around 1000): Ideal for regular sharpening and maintaining edges.
• Fine grit (1200+): Perfect for finishing and polishing the blade.

Absolutely! Sharpening stone blocks aren’t just for kitchen knives. You can use them on a variety of tools, including axes, hatchets, mower blades, and even some garden tools. Just make sure the tool fits comfortably on the stone and follow similar sharpening techniques. Always check the product details to see which tools are compatible, and use caution with larger or irregularly shaped items.

Keeping your sharpening stone clean helps it last longer and work better. After each use, rinse the stone with water (or wipe with a damp cloth if it’s an oil stone) to remove metal particles. Let it air dry completely before storing.

• Store the stone in a dry place, away from moisture.
• If your stone came with a cover or case, use it to protect the surface.

Angle guides can make sharpening easier, especially if you’re new to it. They help you maintain a consistent angle, which is key for getting a sharp edge. Some sharpening stone blocks come with built-in guides, while others offer removable ones. Using an angle guide can improve your results and reduce the learning curve, but you can also sharpen freehand once you’re comfortable. Choose what works best for your skill level and needs.
