Clearances vary by model, but giving a space heater room to breathe can improve safety and performance. A common guideline is to keep the heater at least 3 feet from anything that can burn, and never block the front discharge or rear air intake.

• Place it on a flat, hard, and stable surface.
• Keep clear of curtains, bedding, furniture, and papers.
• Don’t drape the cord across walkways, and avoid extension cords unless the manual allows it.
• Unplug when not in use, and supervise around kids and pets.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the product page or in the manual, and consider any local guidance that may apply.

Code requirements can differ by location and by appliance type (portable electric heater, wall heater, gas unit, or electric fireplace). Rather than relying on a single number, it’s best to confirm what applies to your setup.

1. Check the product manual for “clearance to combustibles,” ventilation, and mounting details.
2. Contact your local building department for any permit or code specifics, especially for gas or hardwired units.
3. Use a qualified installer for fixed or fuel-burning appliances.
4. Keep documentation and follow any safety listings noted in the manual.

On Walmart.com, product pages often include specifications and manuals that outline the required clearances for that specific heater.

A simple rule many shoppers use is to estimate heat need by space and insulation. A 24×24 garage is about 576 sq ft. For moderately insulated spaces, a rough range is 20–30 BTU per sq ft (about 11,500–17,500 BTU/hour). Poor insulation or very cold climates may push needs higher. For electric, some use ~10 watts per sq ft (around 5,700–6,000 watts).

• Consider ceiling height and air leaks (these can increase demand).
• Close doors and seal drafts to reduce required output.
• Choose a garage-rated heater designed for workshops.

These are general guidelines; reviewing the product’s coverage area and your local conditions can help refine the choice.

It depends on the heater’s design. Many units pull air from the back and push warm air from the front, so both paths should stay unobstructed. A practical approach is to keep several inches behind and to the sides, with more open space in front for airflow.

• Check the manual for exact rear, side, and front clearances.
• Keep the heater off soft surfaces (rugs or bedding) that can block vents.
• Avoid tight alcoves unless the unit is rated for recessed or wall-mount use.

For baseboards, wall heaters, or fireplaces, follow the mounting template and listed clearances in the installation guide for that specific model.

Both can warm a space, but they work differently. Choosing the right type often comes down to how you use the room.

• Ceramic (fan-forced): Warms the air quickly and distributes heat across the room. Helpful for small-to-medium rooms you occupy for longer periods. Often has multiple heat settings and a fan sound.
• Infrared (radiant): Warms people and objects directly, so you feel heat fast when you’re in its line of output. Useful for spot heating, drafty areas, or when you move in and out.

Whichever you choose, look for features like tip-over shutoff, overheat protection, and thermostats. Filter by type on Walmart.com to compare specs.
