How do I use a road flare from the kit?

Choose a spot on the road away from the car where you are going to place the flare, making sure there is no leaking gas or debris that can burn. Locate the plastic cap at the end of the flare and remove it. Hold the flare as far away from you as possible, pointing it down. Light it much as you would a match by striking the end against the rough part of the cap. The flare will spray some ignited material, so keep it at arm's length. Place the plastic cap on the non-burning end and set the flare down on the road.
