I foster kittens and also volunteer at a local animal shelter. Disease spread is always a top concern, and most cat scratching posts can't be sufficiently disinfected to be used by more than one litter or shelter cat. My furbaby loves them because they satisfy her need to scratch, mark her scent in doing so, clean and shed the outer layers of her claws, and it's probably just fun and/or a pleasant feeling, especially with the added catnip. I love them because she uses them and not my carpets and furniture for her scratching needs. Plus, her enjoyment is my pleasure. I keep a couple of them lying around on the floor They come with a small packet of catnip—but I typically use my own—to sprinkle over the cardboard. Her cat tree also has a place to insert a narrower, rectangular one. She loves and uses that one the most. The cardboard is durable and well constructed; it's not cheap. It comes in a simple tray to contain it. She uses it multiple times per day, and each one lasts at least 60 days, if not closer to 75-90.
