Pleasantly Addictive!
I am a 69 yr old female, aging appropriately - I think - always looking for ways to stay active physically and mentally. This fills the bill for the mentally agility. Got it - opened it - directions clear and easy - put in batteries - and off to the game! I must have played for a solid hour before I told myself I had a lot of other things that "needed" to be done. One of the first things was to write this review. I only refereed to the directions a few times - for how to play for 1 "solo", and turning off the additional noises that go with the game - I live basically in the quiet lane - so after playing for a while with the pops and pings, I turned the sound off - there are variable levels of the sounds - which would make it more exciting if more people are playing (1-8 players). I have several other mind games on hand that I keep near just to do if I get too idle - I will be adding this to my collection - anticipate it being the go to game for a while - especially like the size - just right for my hands, requires little effort to "twist" through the game operation - and just the size to carry in my handbag for something to do while I away from home and waiting/killing time. I have 4 grandchildren ages 15-24 - I look forward to challenging them (only after I've had a lot of practice time). They could never out-Tetris me - and I trust with a little practice - they won't be able to out SCRABBLE TWIST me either. Kids these days have less interest than ever to be good at spelling - I have often directed them to Mr. Webster - this will be much more fun for them to get sharper for fast thinking and spelling. I like this a lot!
YOUR NEW ADDICTION AWAITS! Buy at your peril!
Scrabble Twist Electronic Game This game came packed well in a box with two other products to review. The box was slightly damaged upon arrival and the scrabble box was slightly bent and dented. There was no actual damage to the product itself that I could find. The contents of the box: Game Unit Instruction Booklet NOTE: This game does require 3 AA batteries that are NOT included in the box. You will need a Phillips screwdriver to install the batteries. I used a larger standard screwdriver personally. The construction of the unit seems very tight and durable. The letters flip when the unit is held upside-down. I like this feature. The game unit has very few menus to worry about and is easy to navigate and understand. You have your game selection part and then the score view and the volume selection. If you want to reset the unit you can take out the batteries. If you wish to reset the high scores, there is a reset button that you hold for 2 seconds. I did not have any players to help me test this unit as I'd hoped. There are three settings for each game style. Knockout PARTY where you have so many seconds to find a word. When you do, you hand it to another player and then they twist to start the timer fort heir turn. If you miss a word, you're knocked out of the game. I think this is actually pretty fun solo too or with any imaginary friends or maybe even split personalities. You can choose how many players you wish to include in the game with a minimum of two players. Then there is the TURBO challenge game. The game is just like the SOLO game version but with more players. You have 60 seconds (at MID level) to find as many words as possible EASY is 75 seconds and PRO is 45 seconds. If you find all of the words with a group of letters, it will give you new letters to work with. You choose the difficulty prior to choosing the game. You twist to change the menu and tab to select your choice. You tap each letter and twist to bank the words found. The unit will let you know if it's correct or not. You can only bank the first found word. Keep trying until you find it again. I really love this game! It is very much addictive and engrossing for all ages. It is easy to use and understand and there is very little to mess up. If you do, you can do the fail-proof fix all method of removing the batteries and trying again. I did not have any difficulties in setting up or using this game so I have no troubleshooting tops, but I'd suppose that removing batteries would be the first step in fixing errors if any. I believe that this is definitely worth the price regardless of what it is.
Fun game, great for car trips too
We love games at our house, especially word games. So, we were anxious to try this game out. This is supposed to be a handheld version of a Scrabble game. It would be much more accurate to call this Boggle Twist than Scrabble Twist! If you are expecting anything like a normal Scrabble game, you'll have to let that thought go. If you like to play Boggle, you will enjoy this game. The unit is easy on the eye and well designed to hold in the hand. It takes three AA batteries. We originally put in some partially used lithium batteries just to try out the game. We played so much we wore out that set of batteries and had to put in new ones! You have to unscrew the back door to the battery compartment with a Phillips-head screwdriver. The batteries slide in a little bit differently on one side, with a sliding compartment divider to help you get them in the right spot. As we tried to play right after putting in the batteries, I wondered why the letters never changed. Being among those people who skim directions sometimes, there were a few things we missed that are important to enjoying the game. Number one - REMOVE the stickers on the circles! Ha ha! We really were not paying attention to that at all. There are stickers on each one of the letter areas (five total) that have to be taken off before you play. Feel free to call me silly - I just wasn't really looking at it right. Second important thing - the SOUND LEVEL. Oh my gosh, this game can be LOUD. We were ready to put duct tape over the speaker portion until we realized that you can adjust the volume in the settings BEFORE you start to play. You can choose high, medium, low or off on the sound, so again, a GREAT feature for car trips. (Maybe we'll read the directions more often.... MAYBE. It is mentioned in them!) The actual game play is fun. We have not tried the party mode of passing it around among up to 8 people, but have tried the turbo and solo play. We prefer the solo play, and just challenge each other to beat the high score. (High scores are also stored in the game until you choose to reset to erase them.) You get five random letters and 60 seconds to try to make as many words as you can from it. Again, more like Boggle than Scrabble. You select the buttons in the order you want to spell the word, and then TWIST it to "register" the word. It will either accept it or you'll hear a buzzer sound of rejection, which is given either for non-words or for words you've already made on that play. Two-letter words do not count. The game has the nice feature of being totally user-friendly for either right or left handed people. You just turn the game around to put the twisting end on whichever side is your dominant hand. It sits nicely in the hand, and was well-designed. This game could have been a lot better with a couple of changes - 1. Expand it to SIX letters. Five is just too limiting, and causes some really bad rounds, depending on the random letters that you get. Six would make it more challenging, have more options and be more fun to play. I hope they consider coming out with a six-letter version. This would be a GREAT game to take on car trips, camping, or using in small groups of people. Yes, we have actually played this game a lot already, and are actually enjoying it. I can actually recommend this one! Enjoy!
