Born in 1917, Thelonious was only 4 years old when his mother moved the family to New York. His father was an avid musician, but health problems forced him back to North Carolina after just a few years. However, his musical talents influenced the young Monk and soon he was playing piano. By his mid twenties, Thelonious was touring with gospel groups and playing in clubs, but it wouldn't be until he became the pianist for one of the house bands at the world famous Minton's Play house that his career would take off.
