While most might consider Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine, or (maybe) Synecdoche< New York to be Kaufman's finest work, they're wrong. Adaptation is both accessible and mesmerizing, and (somewhat to its benefit) less depressing than later Kaufman films.
