A Barracuda 8TB SMR inside , warranty expired

This is for those that dont know about technical details. The firecuda model name is misleading, seagate is calling it like that but there is a barracuda SMR HDD instead. Thus it is ok for WORM use and not large files writes like backup, and not suitable for RAID setup at all. Finally , once the HDD fills close to limit, dont try to defragmenting, instead copy whole thing into another backup and restore it from the to restore performance, thats the reality of Barracuda SMR HDD. Now about walmart part in this, the warranty starts on delivery from seagate , not delivered to you, since mine was 2025, both HDD warranty and data recovery is gone , over. If it is clear from description this fact would help many users, falsely expecting warranty as new items. if this HDD dies in 3 months, you are out of luck. Also , having a new item like HDD in hot warehouse , can mess with lubricants so that's you taking chances with it. 8TB should be plenty for most users, except doing large backups but the SMR limitations with large files writes and also running hot , hotter than similar HDD makes is a complicated and risky proposition. If you did buy it already, keep it vertical and with good airflow, horizontal is not good enough and HDD inside overheated just idling. that is sure way to kill the HDD in 3 months or less

Like many other people, 1st was dead on arrival.

The reason for my rating is because I ended up needing to purchase 3 external hard drives. I had just bought a new Window 11 laptop %26 a used XBOX One X (not the latest Series X console), %26 I wanted an external hard drive for both devices. The 1st Firecuda I bought was dead on arrival. It powered up, but my XBOX %26 Dell laptop wouldn't recognize it. After a couple hours of troubleshooting, I realized it was defective. Thankfully, the 3rd external hard drive I bought worked; otherwise my review would be 2 stars. I've read multiple reviews of other people having the same problem with this particular external hard drive. That's almost unheard of, because Seagate has been 1 of the top %26 most reliable hard drive manufacturers for the past 30 years. Most negative reviews for this model are because XBOX Series X %26 PlayStation 5 don't support it. Microsoft %26 Sony inform customers of specific drives they need to purchase, because they decided not to support regular hard drives with their latest consoles. That doesn't have anything to do with this hard drive not working, unless it also didn't work on a Windows device. The hard drive, Seagate's website, %26 I believe Walmart inform customers about the compatibility. I'm glad it's working now. It was on clearance %26 a great price for an 8 TB 7200 RPM drive; it is the older technology that's phasing out, but it does exactly what I needed it for. My main reason I bought it was because it's Seagate, the size, speed, %26 the price. Comparable external hard drives would've cost me $250 to $300, so overall it's a good buy. I just ranked it low because of the frustrating issues with the 1st drive %26 reading several reviews across the Internet with it being dead on arrival, too.

I got two of these drives. The first one failed and caused my PC to start deleting all my files after about a week. I had to power it down to stop it. I've never seen anything like it, I just noticed my icons disappeared and then my files. I lost so many files. I got another one but refused to connect it to my PC this time. it worked for about 2 months and died. Seagte says my warentee expired but I've only had it for 4 months. I'll never buy a seagte again, they used to be so good.
