The trap works by luring adult fruit flies with a food-based liquid attractant, so its effectiveness depends heavily on placement, since a trap set even a short distance from where the flies are actually swarming will catch noticeably fewer than one placed right in the activity zone, such as directly by a fruit bowl, sink, or trash and recycling area. It's also worth keeping in mind that the trap only catches adult flies, so if eggs or larvae are still breeding in overripe produce, a drain, or garbage residue, new flies can keep appearing faster than the trap catches them, in which case removing that breeding source is what actually resolves the problem long term. If you're seeing very few catches despite good placement and no lingering breeding material, it's also possible you're dealing with fungus gnats or drain flies rather than fruit flies, since those require a different approach entirely.
