The eggs zip closed. Granddaughter didn't want to put her chickens down. This was for a first birthday gift! Of course you must watch the tots don't try to "eat" the chickens but my granddaughter has certainly "kissed" her baby chicks. She loves the set and I plan to get it in all available colors next time I order.
