I knew it required the app before I obtained it, but I did mark it down for cost for the same reason. It is WAY too expensive given that by itself it is completely worthless. Many other wireless thermometers like this one cost the same and even less that has the temperature displayed on the case. Given that this device is completely worthless without downloading and using an app on your phone, I feel it is WAY over priced. However, if you're fine with that, then everything else is as advertised and it works accurately.
