how much is a yard of fabric?????

I am not actually into arts and crafts, however as i needed fabric to make acoustic panels, it would be easier to have somewhere in that department, Some time of conversion chart or something, that will tell you how many yards you need, or how much a yard of fabric actually is in feet, for example. a dimensional analysis that would help you pick how much you need the FIRST time.. I've bought fabric around 4 times and my project still isn't finished.
