This is a fantastic alternative to the solo stove. If you follow the directions and keep the wood below the rim you won't have any issues with smoke blowing in your face. You just have to initially build a big enough fire to get the secondary burn going. Didn't discolor or anything yet. First fire pit I've had that I haven't had to deal with smoke.
