Dirt's Weird Cousin

I bought Miracle-Gro Sphagnum Peat Moss because my wife pointed at it and said, "We need this for the plants." As someone whose gardening expertise is mostly limited to identifying plants as either "alive" or "not alive," I had questions. Mainly: "What even is peat moss?" The bag appears to contain what can only be described as premium swamp leftovers. I opened it expecting soil. Instead, I found a fluffy brown substance that looked like it had been carefully harvested from the floor of an enchanted forest. My first thought was: "There's no way plants care about this." Apparently they do. A lot. The plants absolutely love it. The label says it helps retain moisture, improves soil conditions, and works for both containers and in-ground plants. I can't independently verify any of that because every time I ask a plant for feedback, it refuses to participate in the survey. What I can tell you is that after mixing this stuff into pots and garden beds, my wife's plants started thriving. The plants looked happier. The flowers looked happier. Even the tomato plants seemed slightly smug. Meanwhile, I was standing there wondering how decomposed moss had somehow become a cornerstone of modern civilization. The texture is particularly fascinating. It's incredibly light. I picked up a handful and briefly worried I might accidentally inhale an entire ecosystem. The peat moss also expands and fluffs up in ways that seem mildly suspicious. Add water, and suddenly it looks like it's performing a science demonstration. At one point I became convinced that if left unattended, it might achieve sentience and start offering gardening advice. The best part is that it works in containers and in-ground. For those unfamiliar with gardening, those are apparently the two locations where plants generally live, making this product remarkably versatile. Five stars. I still don't fully understand what peat moss is, where it comes from, or why plants are so excited about it. But it's making things grow, my wife keeps buying it, and that's usually all the evidence I need. 🌱😂🏆

Good

I like the amount of peat moss in this bag. Perfect amount for a 16-22 inch pot. I use it for my hydrangea, hibiscus, and azaleas. It's easy to use and mix in your pot. It helps hold moisture without becoming waterlogged, which is vital for these plants. The ease of use in this size bag makes it my go to for each pot. It's not too heavy to manage. I use a whole bag of this size in my pots and barrels.

Miracle-Grow Sphagnum Peat Moss 8 qt Bag

This Miracle-Grow Sphagnum peat moss is light and fluffy. I'm adding it to my container blueberry potting mix. Certain plants with flowers (like hydrangeas) also benefit from adding sphagnum peat moss to their potting mixtures. Adding this sphagnum peat moss to my container blueberry mix will help aerate and balance its pH. Sphagnum peat moss also helps with water retention when added to potting mixes. A small amount of sphagnum peat goes a long way. This 8 qt bag is large enough to amend several containers. Most soil mixes don't need very much sphagnum peat to help retain water, elevate pH and aerate plant roots.
