Since I discovered shredded chicken in a can, by cooking times have been cut significantly!!!
I have made so many things out of the great value brand can shredded chicken.
Here are just some of the items I have made using it. They are anywhere from meals, to entrees, to appetizers, to soups and even salads!
- Spinach chicken artichoke casserole
- Salsa verde chicken casserole
- Chicken pot pie
- Chicken tetrazzini
- BBQ chicken
- Chicken salad (the mayo and sandwich kind)
- Chicken salad (the lettuce, carrots, onions, etc. kind)
- Chicken Enchiladas
- Chicken Tacos
- Buffalo chicken sandwiches
- Chicken noodle soup
- Chicken and dumplings
- Chicken and rice (broccoli)
- Chicken stuffed peppers
- Chicken baked spaghetti (sort of like chicken parmesan)
- Chicken alfredo (broccoli)
- Chicken a la king
- Chicken bacon ranch wraps
- Chicken margherita pizza
- Shredded chicken taquitos
- Buffalo or ranch chicken pinwheels
- Buffalo chicken dip
- Chicken enchilada dip
This may be a personal preference, but since it does smell kind of like tuna when you first open it (the smell doesn’t bother me, as I like tuna, the rest of my family doesn’t appreciate it… Lol) I peel the lid off, then put the lid directly back in the can to drain it and squeeze all the liquids out.
With the lid still scooted back a little bit, (but still inside the can holding down the chicken) I will turn my water faucet on (hot or cold water works) I use somewhere between warm and hot, as the warmth helps to get rid of the greasiness, and run it under the water for about 30 seconds or so.
While I am running it under the water, I will squeeze/drain the liquids back out several times in an attempt to help rid it of the ‘tuna smell’ and the fat that is inside the can as well.
I feel like I should mention, that whilst squeezing, and draining, and squeezing again, be mindful of the probability of the chicken chunks falling out.
Maybe you will have a better method than I use, but if not, mine is pretty much fail proof. Unless you are anything like me and so awkward/clumsy and drop chunks of chicken in your sink-especially when there’s dirty dishes in it! LOL
I have not used it in white chicken chili, but I’m sure it would be good.
I don’t use the broth that’s in the can, that’s just a personal preference.
The chicken does not have any seasoning, So if you decide to maybe eat it with crackers or plain, you might want to add something to give it that extra little bit of flavor… Personal preference again.
Hopefully my review will be helpful in deciding whether to purchase this item, or just give you some good ideas using shredded chicken. 🫶🏼
