DYK: 70% better for disinfecting than 91%

70% isopropyl alcohol is generally more effective as a disinfectant against bacteria, viruses, and other microbes compared to 91%. The key reason is that the 30% water content in the 70% solution helps the alcohol penetrate cell walls more thoroughly, allowing it to denature proteins and disrupt cellular structures before evaporating. In contrast, 91% isopropyl alcohol evaporates faster and tends to coagulate proteins on the surface of microbes, forming a barrier that can reduce its overall killing power, especially against certain pathogens—it may require longer contact times to achieve similar results. That said, 91% can be preferable for non-disinfection tasks, like cleaning electronics or removing adhesives, where quicker drying and less water residue are beneficial. For general sanitizing (e.g., on skin or surfaces), stick with 70% unless specified otherwise by health guidelines.

Excellent Value, careful order the correct bottle

Folks, if you are in the market for 70% Isopropyl Alcohol this is most definitely the bottle that you should be ordering. I have made my statement in that manner because Walmart sells a smaller bottle (16oz) of exactly the same product, but they charge more money for it. I am not able to see the clarity in that decision, but know that if you do a general search on the Walmart website the other bottle may come up first (the 16oz). But that is not the one that you should be purchasing. It is exactly the same product, I have had them both in my home. One is simply more expensive than the other and although I cannot understand the logic behind it, the smaller bottle (16oz)Is more expensive than the larger one (32oz) .It's simply makes good sense to buy the larger bottle. The actual quality of the product is excellent and what one would receive from any other manufacturer of 70% Isopropyl Alcohol. I definitely recommend the larger bottle.
