This is such a cool gift. It's high quality and easy to assemble.

Short version: if you enjoy complicated models and long hours, this is totally your set. Otherwise, not so much. It is a remarkable piece of machinery: once you get it together, the planets orbit and rotate both, and it's a fully-functioning orrery. That said, it is a bear to put together. It took probably eight or ten hours total, and lots of small pieces. And when you're done, it pretty much looks like a glorified Lego set. My kid eventually got bored of it and I put it together for him, and it wasn't that fun. Truth be told, I wouldn't buy it again. It is cool, and if you're a total Lego nerd (or your kid is), it's probably a lot of fun. But be ready for a big commitment. The picture shows the scale when it's all said and done (hence the tissue box for size perspective). I feel bad, since clearly someone spent a lot of time designing the piece and making the instruction manual (which is pretty good, but it's a book in itself), but the process and the end product just doesn't thrill me.
