Great ice maker

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Love this ice maker! It makes loads of ice very fast. However, I gave only 4 stars because of two things: 1- it is noisy while making ice, the motor and internal mechanism whirs and groans loudly. 2- it is a pain to clean/descale and sanitize.

Cleaning and Descaling for RO Water

We have had the Opal Model XPIO13SW4SS for about 4 months and love the ice it makes, but we use RO water only for filling the tank and have been cleaning it when the CLEAN and DESCALE Lights come on, cleaning weekly and descaling bi-weekly. It seems to be very high maintenance for a residential use product. I see that there are other products on the market that are less expensive and have an automatic cleaning cycle so we may want to return this one.

We recommend only using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. It is recommended that you follow the instructions in the owner’s manual for your unit regarding the schedule of running descaling and sanitizing cycles; the manual is linked here: https://images.salsify.com/image/upload/s--ICQ21ZKI--/dc06c26a71060819d54b8d9bf6c53eb64be9dce9.pdf. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale.
