How can a wireless access point benefit me?

It really depends on what you are looking for. For instance, you could provide an entire house (and beyond) with speedy Wi-Fi access by installing an access point that would feed off your already existing Wi-Fi network. You could also provide free wireless Internet access to your customers, if you owned a business where that type of service was desirable.

Is a wireless access point the same as a wireless router?

Yes and no. A router can be an access point, but an access point can't be a router, even though it looks like one. Access points are used in networks to help with Wi-Fi dead spots and extending a wireless network. Mainstream wireless access points support Wi-Fi and are oftentimes used to reinforce public Internet hotspots and other business networks where larger buildings and spaces need wireless coverage.
