A whelping mat is designed to provide a comfortable, absorbent, and hygienic surface for mother dogs and their puppies during and after birth. These mats help keep the area clean by absorbing fluids and protecting floors from messes. Many are waterproof and non-slip, which helps prevent accidents and keeps puppies safe as they start to move around. Whelping mats can also offer some insulation from cold floors, making the environment cozier for newborn puppies. They're a practical choice for breeders and pet owners looking to support a healthy start for their litters.

It's a good idea to check whelping pads several times a day and change them whenever they become soiled or wet. Puppies and their mother need a clean, dry space to reduce the risk of infection and keep everyone comfortable. In the first few days, you might need to change pads more frequently due to increased mess. Using multiple pads or having extras on hand can make swaps quick and easy. Regular changes help maintain a healthy environment for the litter and make cleanup simpler for you.

• Loose bedding: Materials like straw or shredded paper can pose choking hazards or get tangled around puppies.
• Hard or sharp objects: These can injure the mother or her puppies.
• Strongly scented items: Fragrances can be overwhelming for sensitive newborns and their mom.
• Unnecessary toys or clutter: Keep the space simple and easy to clean to minimize stress and mess.

Focus on essentials like a whelping mat, low-sided box, and clean towels for a safe, comfortable space.

Start with a whelping mat or absorbent pad as the base layer. These are designed to soak up fluids and protect your floors. On top, you can add a washable, non-slip liner for extra comfort and safety. Avoid using thick blankets or loose materials that might bunch up or trap puppies. The goal is to create a surface that's soft, easy to clean, and keeps the area dry. Having a few extra pads or liners on hand makes it simple to swap them out as needed.

1. Remove debris: Shake off any loose fur or mess outside or over a trash bin.
2. Pre-rinse: Rinse the mat with cool water to remove excess fluids.
3. Machine wash: Use a gentle cycle with mild detergent. Avoid bleach or fabric softeners, as these can affect absorbency.
4. Air dry or tumble dry low: High heat can damage waterproof layers, so stick to low settings.

Cleaning regularly helps keep the area fresh and comfortable for both mom and puppies.
